BaNaNaJian ~ Free From Mandarin Papers
There are so much hype going around the recent SPM results recently, many discussed over around many places, particularly like the writting by narrowband. Ok so a lot has been said bout the 19 or 24s, but 1 thing that triggered pa was on The Sun today, “Fewer Taking Chinese Paper”. hah!
A brief summary on that articles stats the concern over the drop in percentage of SPM candidates taking the Chinese paper. Apparently trying to chase for straight ‘A’s.
Let’s reflect back on something that happened when I was in Form 3.
Year: 1997
Location: Catholic High School, PJ
Venue: Inside the headmaster’s room office
Cast: Pa as the “striker”, Ma as the “true die hard supporter”, and Mr. Lee KT (HM) as the “goalkeeper”
Theme: To exempt my son from taking the PMR mandarin paper (wopps tot it was a SPM post, why PMR?! er..)
Minute by minute actions:
Pa: We came to demand request our son to be exempted from taking the Mandarin paper.
HM: No, that is not possible.
Pa: (shocked by the instant reject, not as smooth as expected) We are his parents and we are hear to do a request and share with you some of our thoughts.
HM: If everyone comes in requesting this, we wouldn’t have any Mandarin result to emberass ourselves and we might lose our integrity as an SMJK (C) school.
Pa: Look, you know the result of the Mandarin papers. (Looking at the stacks of folders labelled according to PMR subject results) Can you pls take down the Mandarin result folder and any one of other subject, open and we slowly go through and compare the rates?
HM: …… (starting to pee sweat)
Ma: (Node her head up-down 2 times) MMmm..
HM: …… (mumbled some Hokkien badwords something)
Pa: (syiok dy, his chance to poke come dy) This is because they are trying to act macho maintain the so-called standard, making it hard for students to score.
HM: (giving it a shot to try look good in the match) You all PTD (Diplomatic) officer know it but not doing anything uh?
Pa: (a bit bit insulted) You should raise this issue to the political parties and do something about it, it concerns you directly and if the headmaster of a prestiguous school don’t do it, what is the point?
HM: (admit defeat) Ok, write in a letter and i’ll consider it.
Pa: No! How many times have you seen 2 parents take leave on a working day to wait for you outside your messy office, and to see you about this something to make your school’s grade better? I’ll write a letter saying based on this conversation, we’ve agreed on this.
Ma: (Node her head up-down 3.5 times)
ps: The above conversation is only 99.9% accurate due to the decay over time and that I was shoo requested out of the HM office when the HM is starting to lose ground feels it’s not nice for me to be there looking at him defendless, speechless.
And from that onwards, during every Mandarin class, i’ll be seated at the back of the class, listening to the class, still doing the homeworks, everything else that others do in Mandarin class, except taking the examinations. Well, it ain’t that bad cuz there are a few bananas in the class as well.
I contributed to the percentage of big, long bananas in the class - those not taking Mandarin paper.
Not that i’m utterly proud of not taking Mandarin (it makes me feel down cuz i actually really do suck in it!), and i still look up to those tat are good in the language - those that slams out idiots idioms spontaneously.
Respect!

Jian, I must admit that despite the length of time - 10 years, the narration and recollection was still accurate. Except, the HM also mentioned that all yellow skin from SRJK (C) schools MUST take and sit for Mandarin papers. However, he could not show proof to this official rule!
Also, before the actual game began, the striker and his faithful supporter already had a warm-up practice with the HM’s deputy. KL

Wow, and they say tat warm up is not important sometimes. This is another example on how good warm up will get fired up for an kick ass win!
